Nigeria's phone market has a problem. Counterfeit devices, "UK used" phones sold as brand new, grey market imports with voided warranties, and refurbished phones with replaced batteries are sold openly. Protecting yourself requires knowledge and vigilance.
Buy Only from Authorized Dealers
Every major phone brand has authorized dealers in Nigeria. Buying from an unauthorized seller — even a "trusted" social media vendor — carries significant risk because there is no warranty recourse if something goes wrong.
Check IMEI Numbers
- Dial *#06# on any phone to display its IMEI
- Compare with the IMEI printed on the box
- Check the IMEI on the manufacturer's website
- Use imei.info to check if the phone has been reported stolen globally
Inspect the Box and Packaging
Genuine phone boxes are precisely printed, with clear holograms, QR codes, and seals. Warning signs include blurry printing, broken seals that have been reapplied, or missing accessories.
Test Before Payment
- Insert your SIM and make a call
- Test the cameras — front and back, video and photo
- Check the screen for dead pixels in a dark room
- Check the battery percentage and charging
Be Suspicious of Prices That Seem Too Good
When a deal seems too good to be true, it almost certainly is. Counterfeit phones have become sophisticated — some are nearly indistinguishable externally but run inferior hardware and software.
Get a Receipt with Warranty Details
Always insist on a printed receipt showing the product name, IMEI, purchase date, and warranty terms.
